Being a Member of The Club
The Kuwait Mantas is a self-help, non-profit-making diving club and relies on the voluntary efforts of its members to run the club and make it a success.
We have our own boat which is berthed at Khiran Marina, a "pool" of nearly 50 cylinders, a stock of Buoyancy Compensator Jackets and regulators for rent and a compressor for filling the cylinders. We want to go diving as often and as cheaply as we can. The more everybody puts into the club the more everybody gets out of it!
What you have to do as a member
The social environment of the Club is very important and every member hosts a Club meeting (Tuesday Social) from time to time.
There are also many other ways in which members can contribute - organising fund raising activities, looking after the boat, maintaining the compressor and cylinders and diving equipment, organising training or fund-raising events, managing membership records or finances and so on and so on.
There are also many opportunities to help out on a one-off basis without making a regular commitment, such as helping out with painting the boat or helping to transport furniture for a quiz night.
Club Meetings
Club Meetings, which we refer to as "Socials", are held every Tuesday evening in a different member's home. The most important aim is to have a good time and to that end the emphasis is on socialising with only a small part of the evening actually devoted to a "Club Meeting" as such.
Anybody is welcome to come along - the more the merrier! The host should provide plentiful food and drink for whoever may turn up. Some people cook, some people buy in from one of the many excellent and cheap takeaway restaurants in Kuwait and some people do a combination of the two. Everyone who attends contributes one and a half KD (about 3 pounds sterling) towards the cost of the food and drink so generally the host should cover the costs.
A part of the evening is given over to a "Club Meeting" during which the following weekend's diving is arranged, club announcements and reminders are made and short reports are given on the previous week's diving, training, and so on and any matters of immediate interest or concern are discussed. Then the party continues!
Other Social Activities
The Mantas has its own darts team that plays in the Kuwait Darts League. (Well, we can't go diving all the time!) Matches are every Wednesday from the end of September to the beginning of May with a break for holidays at Christmas. Matches start at about 8:00 pm and finish around midnight. We also play friendly matches and have practice evenings. To play in the darts team costs KD 40 a season and for that you will be 'fed and watered' for about 24 Wednesday nights, have a good night out and meet lots of people outside your work and the dive club. If you host a darts match you get your 40 KD back! Can't be bad!
